bamboo rod maker
Barry is a retired radiologist, long time fly fisherman (55+ years) and conservationist. He began making fly rods from bamboo in 1998 having apprenticed with Ed Hartzell, a master rodmaker in Portland, OR. His wife Diana (Deni) is a native Vermonter from the Northeast Kingdom and after his retirement in 2000 they moved to Shaftsbury, VT where he began acquiring and making rod building tools and machines. Since then he has made rods almost entirely for friends, acquaintances and himself.
The process demands a high level of attention to detail as well as a variety of skills learned from his mentor and other rodmakers at Bamboo Rodmakers’ Gatherings and web based discussion groups over the years. The challenge of making a functioning rod from coarse raw materials with the goal of each step as close to perfection as possible is a strong motivation. The ability to produce an instrument of the action and esthetic details desired by the owner is indeed gratifying.
Barry is the current vice president of the Southwestern Vermont Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
